Mar 15 Joomla Community Components - The replacements for the well known "Community Builder" PDF

Since the days of Mambo - Joomlapolis Community Builder (in those times it was Mambojoe's community builder) - was the only way to enhance the scarce profile of  Mambo/Joomla. CB is now one of the most popular Joomla extension in Extensions Directory and an Editor Pick  (one of the few picks there are).
Althou there is nothing wrong with Joomlapolis Extension, with time appeared some interesting alternatives to it. There are several Free, some Commercial and some of them even Encrypted (Joobi). We analysed two free Extensions that look very promising (and are both now in Beta stage)

Joomunity

It’s fresh, it’s new, it’s beta
Joomunity

I liked the way they created the install (it’s something like the installer for yahoo that is small and then downloads a lot of other things in order to install the real app), yet it did not work for me as intended. Maybe it is my windows installation that is bothering (I have tested it in Apache under Windows XP64), or maybe some other weird setting I have – but it could not install the files from the remote repository.  I think it was the fact that URL file-access is disabled on my server (due to obvious security issues involving remote file access)

Warning</b>:  file_get_contents() [<a href='function.file-get-contents'>function.file-get-contents
</a>]: URL file-access is disabled in the server configuration in <b> \administrator\components
\com_joomunity\versionxml.php</b> on line <b>3</b><br />

The manual installation worked fine thou.

First impression is good – clean admin interface, the now almost standard sidebar with options and pleasant graphics.

User Management is quite simple – you can edit, block and send warnings to users..

The additional profile fields can ve added from “Social Profile Fields”  - the interface is quite simple and clean. As an option you get Single line text, multi line text, date field, drop down list, radio input button.

We received an error when trying to edit the profile from frontpage (Call to a member function model_contact_view() on a non-object in D:\www\Joomla1.5\components\com_joomunity\applications\Profile\profile.php on line 90 ) Could be this error is fixed in a later version. I mention this just to have you attentive to the word “Beta” of this extension.

By default the Extension comes with several plugins : Comments, Friends, Minifeeds, Messages , Photos, Contacts and Articles.

A very nice feature  is the templating system of the whole user interface. There is the need to be a little aware of PHP when you modify the templates.

As a bottom line – the Joomunity Extension is a good piece of software, but be aware of its bugs and keep an eye ofn its releases. It is very promising.

CBE – The German connection

Another new Community Extension comes from germany ( by Jan Möhrke) . At the first you have to find the english version of the site – then it’s all on it’s right way.

CBE takes the road of the well known “Community Builder” Extension. The Administrator can manage Users, Tabs, Fields,  Lists.
Tab Management is quite similar to Community Builder. It has althou a quite ingenious twist: you can edit a condition in witch a certain tab is shown in the profile (sepparate conditions for my profile and for other users profile )

 CBE Logo

Fields management goes also the “classic way” of Community Builder. You can choose from several field types, choose if the field is read-only, required …

Another interesting new feature is the possibility to filter certain usernames. For instance usernames that are insulting or misleading (root, admin, master…). This usernames will not be allowed upon registration.

The Extension has a lot of native integrations (Fireboard, Zoom media gallery, Guestbook) and some nice built in features like “GeoCoder” and “Geo User Map

Bottom line to this Extension is – if you are looking for an extension that stays within the paradigm of Community Builder, but with some fresher ideas – this would be the choice. Also a great extension for german speaking users since they can have german native speaking support and language files.

said it all I thought - if you want a review of a/your commercial app why
not just supply one?

Thanks for this folks - interesting to get views
not directly related to the product

Great potential, but JomSocial is also there.. wich has (at the moment) more to
offer than Joomunity.

You'dd better review your writing, and/or add a JomSocial
paragraph to it!
With a tiny search, you would have seen this application emerge
within the Joomla! community.

And for all sake:
"there is nothing wrong
with Joomlapolis Extension.."
Well, you might have a look at the code, it's
a total mess to work with for a developer!
admin   |SAdministrator |2009-03-31 08:58:17
avatar Sure that is in the perspective of a developer. I know how the code looks, but
for an enduser the coding is not so obvious.

I really think there is nothing
wrong with CB - it is just not the most modern paradigm.
I know there are a lot
of people that disagree... but you know opinions are quite subjective

how rude lol - where is yours and why dont you stay there?

And
considering the open source/free nature of the code they add too - the
price is ridiculous imo. Not even a nerfed version for free LOL. Guess
I wont be trying jomsocial. Please include some identity also when pimping
- kinda rude to pretend to be a passing anon lol

why all this big fuss around joomsocial?! me as a freelancer, i've done over 300
sites but when it was needed i used only CB. even some clients requested
especially for it. Till joomsocial will be an alternative for CB there is a long
way to go. not to mention that i dont think they will ever get so far. nothing
against joomsocial, but cb is way to popular....
rk  - CBE infos - thanks!   |Guest IP85.179.225.xxx |2009-04-01 17:39:39
funny ? the first place i read about the little differences between CB
and CBE... i did ask and post many requests for an easy feature list or
important differences...
a .RO site finally gives some insight.
Do you
have more details?

TIA!!! !!! !!!

avatar For the moment i did not had the necessary experience with CBE in order to point
out much more. I had a look at the code and i tested the extension.
These are
my first impressions.
As soon as i will use these extensions in an extensive
project i will write an article regarding it
Christine  - CB is just fine by me     |Guest IP203.206.93.xxx |2009-04-02 01:46:12
I have several sites where I use CB with AEC for integrated paid
registration.

The great thing about CB is that it's so customisable with all
the great extensions and plug-ins available for it.

And CB seems to get better
and better all the time.

For me, I'll stick with what I have because it works
:-)

Hi Sergey,
glad to have you here
I did not forget, if you read my
previous comment about this matter i choose only free products.
and
Joomsuite is commercial and AFAIK encrypted.

Very interesting
Anonymous   |Guest IP68.103.96.xxx |2009-04-09 16:40:34
I have JomSocial and it is by far the most advanced Community Extension out
there. The price is also very hefty, but that is reasonable cause you can't get
anything out there like it!
PageMasterRWS  - Looking for something specific     |Guest IP98.215.174.xxx |2009-04-13 10:24:19
I've been looking for something specific in a community extention and either
can't find it due to it not being available or am missing it somewhere. I'm
looking for the ability to re-direct upon login to a specific page and have that
page display certain, not all, user information from their profile. So far I
have not seen anything that does this. Sure would be a nice feature that would
help enhance the social/community structure many are looking for including
myself.
Martin  - multilingual     |Guest IP88.31.103.xxx |2009-09-30 01:04:52
well... CB is doing quite well... if you do not make a multilingual
page, not using that translation-tools of google or babelfish. those deliver too
many errors in the translations so you cant understand the text anymore in the
end. so what is the problem with cb...
firstup - since about 2 years there is no
proper solution to get joomfish working with CB even if there is a plugin
existing that should have done the trick. but is wont. you could translate the
file... but: it's unclear how the CUSTOMISED FIELDS are titled in the SQL
database - so you cant easily translate those.
instabilities... there are many
plugins, modules and stuff which can make your CB break down.
right now i get a
white page, if i try to edit the user details on the front page, and did not yet
find the switch which would be in the wrong position.

CB works fine - if you
keep with the basics and dont need anything more than it delivers. if you ne...
